Emily F.
Private tutor in Montréal, Canada
Education
I graduated from Concordia University in Montreal with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Creative Writing, with Distinction. I subsequently attended the MA program in Literatures of Modernity at Ryerson University in Toronto, where I was a teaching assistant for an undergraduate English class. I have presented at symposia and conferences on a range of subjects.
Experience
I have been tutoring since 1999, both privately and with an after-school program at the Riverside School Board. I have worked with kindergarten students who needed a bit of extra help learning the fundamentals, a high school athlete who wanted math tutoring to stay in a sport-etude program, a woman in her fifties who needed a statistics credit to obtain her Master's, and a university graduate who needed Math 536 to get into a nursing program. Lately, I've been specializing in CEGEP and undergrad English Literature. My specialties are poetry, Shakespeare (and other Elizabethan literature!), video games as literature, science fiction, Old English, and Victorian literature. I even co-edited a peer-reviewed digital edition of a Victorian werewolf novel! My tutoring style is fairly laid-back. I like to meet my students where they are academically, and work from there. If poetry's a little opaque to you, or if Shakespeare makes no sense, that's okay! Everyone starts somewhere. For me, a successful lesson is one that includes laughter, enjoyment of the subject, and at least one "aha" moment. Nobody learns well when they're stressed or anxious, and if a silly joke about Hamlet being Ross from friends helps you figure out what's going on with Hamlet, then so much the better. I'll help you structure papers, go over grammar with you, come up with word problems, and work with you to figure out the learning style that works for you. Large classes have to go with the way that works for most people, but my favourite thing about tutoring is the varying approaches I can take to find the angle that works best for each student.
